Overview

Under general supervision of the Fire Captain, the Fire Engineer drives assigned fire apparatus or other automotive equipment to scenes of fire and emergencies. Performs all essential duties of Firefighter and Fire Engineer classifications.

Responsibilities

  • Drives all fire equipment to location of fire or other emergency situations and positions truck in most advantageous manner.
  • Operates fire pumps, aerial devices, and other fire department equipment.
  • Assists in suppression of fires and the mitigation of other emergency incidents.
  • Participates in fire prevention inspections and maintenance of department apparatus.
  • Ensures engines are maintained and are serviced as needed.
  • Ensures Firefighters are trained up on fire engine operations and expectations of the engineers.
  • Ensures all lifesaving medical equipment is in good working order and requests are put in promptly to confirm equipment is maintained, fixed, and/or replaced.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or equivalent work experience is preferred.
  • Certificate of completion from a State Certified Fire Academy.
  • Certified by the California State Board of Fire Services as a Firefighter 1.
  • EMT B Certification.
  • Possession of a current CPR card.
  • Valid Firefighter Class B California Driver’s License.
  • Completed Firefighter 1 Certification Task Book under the NWCG PMS 310-1.
  • Two years’ experience as a Firefighter required.
  • Must complete Chumash Fire Department Structure Firefighter Task Book within one year from hire date.
  • Must complete Apparatus Operator 1A and 1B.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior and suppression techniques; operation and maintenance of pumping engines and water tender; practical/applied hydraulics; mathematics; water pressure and flow calculations; hydrant and water main systems; traffic laws and regulations; reservation geography; universal fire vocabulary and emergency medical care and basic life support techniques; basic mechanical and building construction maintenance principles; universal safety precautions when providing medical attention; equipment safety inspection procedures; the proper handling of toxic/hazardous materials.
  • Must be insurable to drive department vehicle.
  • Must pass physical agility test within 30 days of hire and continue to pass each year of employment thereafter.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Basic computer proficiency utilizing Microsoft applications, email, and internet.
  • Native American hiring preference applies.
