Overview

At the direction of the Billing Supervisor, the Billing Specialist is responsible for the collection of all outstanding accounts. Responds to patients’ questions regarding billing statements either by telephone or in person. Coordinates with front office team to ensure all outstanding patient accounts are addressed before next appointment. Reviews and follows up on unpaid claims from 3rd party insurance on an as needed basis based on each month-end accounts receivable report. Processes collection batches monthly.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the collection of all outstanding accounts.
  • Responds to patients’ questions regarding billing statements by telephone.
  • Coordinates with front office team to ensure all outstanding patient accounts are addressed before next appointment. 
  • Reviews 90-day overdue patient balances and sends demand letters.
  • Prepares 120+ day overdue balances for the collection agency.
  • Posts all payments received from patients, insurance companies, and other 3rd parties.
  • At payment posting, bills secondary coverage or patient.
  • Mails paper claims on a weekly basis.
  • Ensures a deposit is prepared and deposited to the bank daily.
  • Downloads electronic remittance advices (ERAs) from clearinghouse daily.
  • Assists with coding duties as needed under the direction of the Billing Manager.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned by the Billing Manager.
  • Assists with following up on unpaid claims from 3rd party insurance.
  • May code and bill charges monthly as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Assisting, Accounting or equivalent work experience.
  • One year of previous billing experience in the healthcare industry preferred.
  • Intermediate computer proficiency utilizing Microsoft applications, e-mail, and internet.
  • Practical knowledge of billing procedures, regulations, and principles to carry out a variety of billing functions.
  • Medical Billing/Coding class completion.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. 
  • Willingness to receive continuing education training (some travel required) such as CPC or CPB Certification.
  • Native American hiring preference applies.
