Overview

 The Auxiliary Fire Specialist I performs various skilled firefighting techniques in the suppression and prevention of fires, and in providing emergency medical services. While performing duties related to position based on assignments that would be similar to various NWCG single resource boss positions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises multiple resources while on assignment.
  • Collaborates with different agencies, fire departments, tribal organizations, and additional resources.
  • Conducts visual and audio observations including searches of buildings and outdoor areas.
  • Delivers and receives information, directions, and commands within the scope of the position.
  • Works effectively with the Sheriff’s Department, Emergency Service Providers, and the general public.
  • Operates emergency vehicles while exercising due care and caution, and in exception to traffic control devices; in congested traffic; in unsafe road conditions; and in environmental conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.
  • Reads, comprehends, and follows rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and applicable laws of Township ordinances for purposes of ensuring appropriate Fire Fighter behavior/response on and off duty.
  • Ensures compliance with State and County EMS policies and procedures.
  • Drives fire engine and transports firefighting personnel to an emergency site; locates hydrants, operates pumps, evaluates water system and supply.
  • Responds to fire emergencies; takes incident command as needed; operates various firefighting, control, and rescue equipment; performs fire ground operations; responds to and participates in emergency situations involving toxic/hazardous materials.
  • Renders emergency medical care and CPR to the sick and injured.
  • Completes required administrative forms, reports, and department documentation.
  • Attends and participates in all mandatory training activities, practice drills, and physical fitness programs regardless of the scheduled duty day.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • One (1) year experience on a Fire Department within the last twentyfour (24) months required.
  • Certified by the California State Board of Fire Services as a Firefighter 1.
  • Two years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Possession of a current CPR card.
  • Completed Firefighter 1 Certification Task Book under the NWCG PMS 310-1.
  • Qualified under the NWCG as a single resource boss.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management skills and techniques; able to foster teamwork and develop and mentor others in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior and suppression techniques; operation and maintenance of pumping engines and water tender; practical/applied hydraulics; mathematics; water pressure and flow calculations; hydrant and water main systems; traffic laws and regulations; reservation geography; universal fire vocabulary and emergency medical care and basic life support techniques; basic mechanical and building construction maintenance principles; universal safety precautions when providing medical attention; equipment safety inspection procedures; the proper handling of toxic/hazardous materials.
  • Must be insurable to drive department vehicle.
  • Must pass physical agility test within 30 days of hire and continue to pass each year of employment thereafter.
  • Basic computer proficiency utilizing Microsoft applications, e-mail and Internet.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules in a 24/7 work environment.
